  • Is part of the Christmas in Leeds art trail commission by Leeds BID
  • The installation uses the voices of over 50 people in Leeds about their experiences of Christmas.

You are invited to take a seat at the table, enjoy a moment of reflection and share in an intimate conversation over a warm drink. The creator of The Weather Café, David Shearing, invites you to find stillness in the midst of the festive chaos. Presenting the stories of people living in and connected to Leeds, Christmas with us reveals personal stories, highlighting the beauty and the difficulty of the Christmas season.

About the Artist

David is an award-winning artist making immersive multimedia experiences. His work operates as a hybrid between fine art and performance practices that challenge audiences to reconsider their relationships to each other and their environment. He works with hi and low technologies such video, light, sound and spatial design to create highly emotive and reflective environments. His previous works include The Weather Café (2016), an immersive pop-up café installation.  In 2014 he was awarded a competitive Sky Academy Arts Scholarship to develop ‘The Weather Machine’. In 2013 he won the World Stage Design award for Best Installation for ‘and it all comes down to this…’ (2012). He studied Performance Design at Central Saint Martin’s (2009) and has a PhD in audience immersion, University of Leeds (2015). www.davidshearing.com

About Christmas in Leeds  

Welcome to Leeds presents Christmas in Leeds – a trail of art, light and magic!

The trail features artist commissions, helping you to explore Leeds through 15 unique installations.

Christmas In Leeds is something new; a trail of art, light and magic for all ages, designed to guide people around Leeds whilst simultaneously showcasing both local creatives and shining a light on all of the city’s corners.

Running from 1st December-3rd January, travellers on the trail can enjoy: a gigantic and surreal semi-human shining high over commuters in Leeds Station, a shower of lights cascading down Holy Trinity Church’s façade, some added sparkle in Park Square’s trees, and a 4×4 box art experience which captures unique scenes of festive humanity. There are also performances from Northern Ballet, festive light projections from Leeds College of Art, some helpful elves and some sleeping polar bears!

Members of the public can pick up maps from key locations across the city centre, including hotels and the Leeds Visitor Centre and also download a digital version from Christmas.welcometoleeds.co.uk.
